Interview conducted during the 4TH EDITION INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE SURFACE - FAUP | September 2016
PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARCHITECTURE, CROSSING BORDERS SHIFTING BOUNDARIES
Other interviewed authors: Anna Fox | Karen Knorr | Marco Iuliano | Paolo Rosselli | Philipp Schaerer |Pedro Bandeira | Ângela Ferreira | Carlos Lobo | José Pedro Cortes | Lara Jacinto | Mariela Apollonio | Olívia da Silva | Walter Costa
The interviews offer us a space for exploration and reflection about our time and the world of architecture and photography as document or art, and they constitute an exceptional and rich account of thirteen authors and their experiences and ideas. These authors have agreed to talk about themselves and their work.
Philipp Schaerer (b. 1972) is a visual artist, Architect and knowledge manager at Herzog & de Meuron (2000-06), taught the postgraduate course for CAAD headed by Prof. Ludger Hovestadt at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ). Since 2010, Philipp Schaerer has been teaching at various Swiss universities and his work has been published and exhibited repeatedly and is represented in several public and private collections. These include, among others, the collection of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe, The Museum of Modern Art MOMA in New York, The Canadian Center for Architecture in Montréal and the Fotomuseum in Winterthur. Philipp Schaerer lives and works in Zurich and Steffisburg (Switzerland).
In this interview Philipp Schaerer talks, among other issues, about the significance of an event as On the Surface for better understanding the relations between Architecture, Art and Image, specifically Photography, as well as an editorial project as scopio Edition. We can hear Schaerer opinion about the transformations that are occurring with the digital universe in respect to the creation of images, being one of these transformations the shift of our conventional comprehension about the abstract representations being linked to an ideal and the photographic representation being linked to documentation / evidence. This interview allows us to understand better what new strategies can be taken in relation to the new possibilities that the digital representations allow making us rethink about the truth of digital images that can represent with photographic reality spaces that have still not been built.
