Saving Fire for Darker Days
Saving Fire for Darker Days
On the photographic project:
“Guardar o fogo para dias de pouca luz” (“Saving fire for darker days”) by Maria Oliveira is a photographic project which, by the way it explores the aesthetic and expressive aspects of the image, introduces an “other space” between that which is the realistic representation of the object (its index value) and the subjective representation of the author.
Maria Oliveira’s project thus comes close to a certain contemporary documental photography but still maintains a considerable link to the modernist currents from the mid-20th century, challenging us in a significant way and on various levels. Through the mastery and poetry with which she works with light and in her monochromatic palette, the author reveals her technical expertise and how she was influenced by the moderns who worked with the technical aspects of the photographic language as a plastic expression: photography as a sign able to respond to diverse discourses and purposes. In fact, it is a work that denotes what Lucy Soutter1 mentions on the topic of much of contemporary photography, which is that within a work of a single photographer diverse aesthetic influences may coexist that are difficult to distinguish and that quite often are juxtaposed upon one’s own.
