INTENTIONAL MANIPULATION OF THE IMAGE
PROJECT SUBMISSION

Submission Guidelines

To promote photography and search for new talents and foster the awareness of photography, both in Portugal and abroad we are currently accepting photographic projects proposals for online publication on scopionetwork.com, with potential for inclusion in forthcoming printed editions of scopio Editorial Line, most possibily in scopio Magazine. We’re interested in imaginative and impactful visual narratives belonging to the Documentary and Artistic photography universe.

In this call we ask for photographic projects that intentionally manipulate or construct images, which should function as visual narratives proposing new readings for existing architectural spaces and publics. These projects invoke the work of authors that intentionally manipulate the image, abandoning the commitment to deliberately express the reality perceived by their gaze.

They might be authors that intentionally create their projects from a strategy or an event orchestrated to create an image or photographic series. Some examples are Erwin Wurm’s Outdoor Sculpture (1999), George Rousse’s Mairet (2000), Philip-Lorca diCorcia’s Head (2000) or Jeff Wall's Passerby (1996). Alternatively, they might be authors that reflect contemporary possibilities offered by the creation of images with digital tools, which significantly amplify and potentiate the photographic practice. The new projects should focuses on imaginary sceneries of contemporary architecture and public spaces in the Oporto Metropolitan Area.

Going beyond traditional objective approaches, exploring the fictional universe and creating alternative sceneries or critical readings of existing spaces, the objective is to go against the saturated consumption of architectural images in the mass media. Some examples of those proposition are the works of Idris Khan, Olivo Barbieri, Filip Dujardin, Beate Gütschow, Emilio Pemjean or Isabel Brison. The visual narratives submitted should make use of the photographic image in an exploratory way, as a medium capable of communicating spaces and people through diverse imaginaries, cultures, architectures and modes of spatial appropriation.

If we accept your series, your photos will be displayed in scopio editorial layout created specifically for your photography project. A short bio with links to your portfolio/site and social outlets will be included in the feature.

The Fine Print

Using the form on our page, upload 5-10 low-resolution images that are editorial in nature and representative of your series’ theme. These are not the final images and should be provided as either JPGs / PNGs, compiled into a PDF, or compressed into a single ZIP archive.
If accepted, we will require high-resolution versions of all files for publishing at various screen resolutions (exact specifications and usage details will be provided upon acceptance of submissions).
