John Goto Prize ESMAD, P. PORTO
Open to higher education students in the visual arts, of any nationality, individuals or groups.
The School of Media Arts and Design (ESMAD), of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (P. PORTO), is launching the John Goto Prize ESMAD, P. PORTO, in honour of the artist-photographer John Goto, whose innovative work contributed to the reformulation of photography as a means of social commentary and cultural criticism.
The Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) group at the Centre for Architecture and Urbanism Studies (CEAU-FAUP) is part of this Award, and there is also a partnership for the Communication and Dissemination of this initiative through the Contrast project, which brings together 12 higher education schools teaching photography in various disciplinary and artistic areas.
We invite higher education students in the visual arts (photography, video, cinema, digital arts, multimedia, design, fine arts), of any nationality, to participate, either individually or in groups, with innovative approaches that use photography and/or the other areas mentioned above as a means of reflecting on contemporaneity.
Four proposals for exhibitions or installations, individual or collective, will be selected by a selection panel made up of artists and researchers of recognised competence.The exhibitions featuring the selected works will be open to the public, on a date to be defined, in the exhibition spaces of the P. PORTO universe and institutions with agreements with ESMAD.The authors whose proposals are selected will receive a grant of €1,500 (one thousand five hundred euros) for support and production in the context of the exhibitions.

The team of this project counts on the solid experience ofseveral higher education institutions – ARCO, DARQ, DCAM, EA.UCP, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP, FEUP, IPT e UL.CUP – that through several projects, research and initiatives, ensure a strong integrated and complementary strategy of teaching, research and communication.
The project has a joint coordination in partnership with the Cultural Association Cityscopio, ESMAD-uniMAD andFBAUP – i2ADS, and is led by FAUP through the research group Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) integrated in theCentre for the Study of Architecture and Urbanism (CEAU), being funded by DGARTES contest to support projects of creation and edition, through the Cultural Association Cityscopio.
