This publication results from a collaboration between the Centre for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism of U.Porto’s Faculty of Architecture (CEAU/ FAUP) and the Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies of U.Porto’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities (CETAPS/FLUP). The projects Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) and UTOPIA 500, embraced by these two R&D centres, gave rise to the Drawing and Photography International Contest (DPIc), which was held for the first time in 2016.

The quality and relevance of the works submitted in 2016, as well as the recognition of the Contest’s relevance on the part of several members, and national and international institutions, were some of the reasons behind this rst issue of the DPIc and behind the decision to hold a second edition of the Contest, this time with the theme The Space and Identity of the Universities. The second edition will have the participation of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the Chalmers University of Technology (CUT), the University of Aveiro, the University of Ferrara, the University of Liverpool, the University of South Wales and the University of Zaragoza, which will join this contest through the international network for research development and dissemination, AAi2 Lab, in articulation with the project Visual Spaces of Change (VSC).

The first issue of the DPIc was made possible thanks to the joint support of U.Porto Press and Scopio Editions. This publication is a recognition of the Contest’s relevance and of the importance of interdisciplinary collaborations to build bridges of understanding between the constructed world and the envisioned world.

The launch and presentation of this publication will take place during 2020 in another session integrated in the Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) Conference and Debates cycle, that may occur in the shape of videoconference due to COVID-19.

This publication is already available at our bookstore and in AEFAUP’s library, as well as in the Rectorate’s library through U.Porto Press and in the various FNAC stores.

Esta publicação é o resultado da colaboração entre o Centro de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto (CEAU/FAUP) e o Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (CETAPS/FLUP). Através dos seus projetos de investigação Arquitetura, Arte e Imagem (AAI) e UTOPIA 500, estes dois centros de I&D lançaram o concurso Internacional de Desenho e Fotogra (DPIc) que teve a sua primeira edição em 2016.

A qualidade e o interesse dos trabalhos apresentados, bem como o reconhecimento do potencial que teria uma publicação, simultaneamente online e em papel, que fosse capaz de divulgar as diversas iniciativas em volta da investigação desenvolvida por parte dos membros e instituições nacionais e internacionais nestas temáticas de AAI e da Utopia, estiveram na origem da organização deste primeiro número e justificam a decisão de abertura de uma segunda edição do Concurso, desta feita direcionado para o Espaço e Identidade das Universidades. Esta segunda edição conta com a participação da Universitat Politècnica Catalunya (UPC), da Chalmers University of Technology (CUT), da Universidade de Aveiro, da Università degli Studi di Ferrara, da University of Liverpool, da University of South Wales e da Universidad de Zaragoza, que se unem a este concurso através da rede internacional para difusão e fortalecimento da investigação, AAi2 Lab, articulada com o projeto Visual Spaces of Change (VSC).

A publicação DPIc nasce com o apoio da chancela da U.Porto Press, que se associa à scopio Editions neste primeiro número. Representa o reconhecimento deste concurso e a importância que as colaborações entre diferentes áreas disciplinares poderão ter no entendimento do mundo construído e imaginado.

O lançamento e apresentação desta publicação terá lugar ainda durante o ano de 2020 em mais uma sessão integrada no programa do ciclo de Conferências e Debates Arquitectura, Arte e Imagem (AAI), mas que poderá decorrer em formato de videoconferência devido à situação de estado de alerta em virtude do COVID-19. 

A publicação encontra-se disponível na nossa bookstore e na livraria da AEFAUP, bem como na Livraria da Reitoria através da U.Porto Press e estará também disponível em algumas das lojas FNAC.

Últimos dias do Ci.CLO Bienal Fotografia do Porto 2019

Ainda se encontram em exibição nas estações de Metro do Porto da Avenida dos Aliados e de São Bento, na OARSN e na Biblioteca Almeida Garrett um conjunto de projectos de Fotografia Contemporânea com particular enfoque nas temáticas da Arquitectura, Cidade e Território, comunicados por intermédio de projecção de vídeo e fotografia.

Estas exposições que contam com a curadoria de Pedro Leão Neto resultam da vontade de colaboração entre o projecto Visual Spaces of Change (VSC) e o Ci.CLO Bienal Fotografia do Porto 2019, tendo em vista o estímulo do pensamento crítico sobre as temáticas da Arquitectura, Cidade e Território através da realização de exposições de Fotografia Contemporânea em espaços públicos e de uso coletivo localizados na Área Metropolitana do Porto.

O Visual Spaces of Change (VSC), projeto de investigação transdisciplinar com uma componente significativa da Fotografia Contemporânea, combinada com pesquisa complementar em Sintaxe Espacial e Tecnologias da Informação, marcará presença no Ci.Clo 2019.

A colaboração entre o VSC e o Ci.Clo concretiza-se através da operacionalização de um projeto curatorial associado a um conjunto de atividades que cruzam os universos da fotografia e editorial em duas vertentes complementares: (i) Exibição de projectos de Fotografia Contemporânea (CPP) comunicados por intermédio de projecção de vídeo e fotografia em diversos espaços públicos e de uso coletivo localizados na Área Metropolitana do Porto (AMP), e (ii) Mostra de publicações alternativas para a divulgação de autores e obras com particular enfoque na Fotografia de Arquitectura, Cidade e Território.

O Ci.Clo 2019 decorre entre os dias 16 de maio e 2 de julho.

MAD SUMMER School 2019

MAD Summer School is an international learning experience and aims to showcase of the educational offer of School of Media Arts and Design: Cinema, Photography, Graphic Design, Multimedia and Web Development. Taking place in the portuguese north coast, Summer School offers masterclasses and workshops by renowned tutors in combination with an exciting program of film screenings and evening talks. The projects and artworks developed during the week will result in a group exhibition at Casino Póvoa de Varzim. Based in Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim, we will create a creative environment ideal for sharing ideas and also an enjoyable framework for teaching, learning and the development of projects.

The Photography program of MAD Summer School 2019 includes a 4 days workshop with Antoine D’Agata and a workshop on “Visual Storytelling” with Erik Kessels This intense and learning experience is addressed to artists working with visual narratives through photography, wishing to learn more about the possibilities of editing and exploring the news paths on Photography. Participants will rethink about their work in progress, interact with contemporary photographic discourse, and develop practical experience and critical knowledge of Photography with the support of a Team of Mentors. The programe will focuses on the artistic construction of visual storytelling and will help you discover your own visual language as well as practical and conceptual know how to confront real situation documental making. At the end of the program, participants will have developed theoretical contents and articulating them with a strong practical and artistic exploration, presenting their work in progress.

In SUMMER SESSIONS participants will learn:

• Documentary narrative storytelling approaches with the artist Erik Kessels.

• Editing and sequencing photographic projects with Antoine d´Agata.

This will be a hands on Summer Talks, workshops with tutors, individual assignments, daily group discussion and editing sessions.The Esmad team works one-on-one with selected participants to produce an oudoor exhibition under the guidance of the mentors team and they can accentuate your artistic practice and technique within a collective setting.

The MAD Summer School of Photography is an international learning experience for artists and students working with Photography and Visual Arts, as well as professionals worldwide, designed to build and celebrate photographic talent.

MAD Summer School takes place between the 10th and the 20th of July, in Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal.

5TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
VISUAL SPACES OF CHANGE: UNVEILING THE PUBLICNESS
OF URBAN SPACE

The 5th International Conference ON THE SURFACE Photography on Architecture took place on the past 31st of May at MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) .

The program of the conference consisted of three round tables in which photography was explored as a significant instrument of research to build innovative and critical visions on architecture as a broad field of knowledge operating within larger systems, with cultural, artistic, technical and historical dimensions. The main focus of the 5th edition of On The Surface was to question how different dimensions of the public sphere can be significantly understood or refracted through different lenses and perspectives. At the heart of this debate was the contemporary discussion that the city's image is itself modified within the actual process of change according to specific sensory and cognitive conditions, influencing the readability of public space and the imagination of the public sphere. At this conference these and other interrelations were debated and explored to infer how they can establish new spatial connections in expanded territories of cosmopolitan interaction. Within this broader discussion, each roundtable addressed the following issues, among other issues posed by invited authors.

Also, during the Conference, all participants were given the opportunity to visit the exhibition “Fiction and Fabrication: Photography of Architecture After the Digital Turn”, on display at MAAT until the 19th of August 2019. This exhibition is curated by Pedro Gadanho (who gave a guided tour of the exbition) and Sérgio Fazenda Rodrigues.

PALESTRA "SCOPIO NETWORK: FOTOGRAFIA, ARQUITECTURA E URBANISMO": Instituto Português de Fotografia do Porto

No passado dia 24 de Abril (4ªf), teve início pelas 18h, no Instituto Português de Fotografia do Porto uma palestra de Pedro Leão Neto. Fundador da SCOPIO Network, coordenador da revista scopio e do grupo de investigação CCRE na Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto – onde também é docente de fotografia e CAAD – partilhou algumas ideias em torno da criação da SCOPIO Network e do projeto Visual Spaces of Changes, discorreu sobre a imagem fotográfica enquanto instrumento de mediação e indagação da arquitectura e do espaço público, abordando também a dimensão discursiva que o média fotográfico desenvolve quando é integrado no formato de livro.
