On March 29th, at 18h30 FAUP will receive the conference "INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND DRAWING CONTEST (DPIc) - PRESENTATION OF "A TALK ON ARCHITECTURE IN PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTOGRAPHS BY PAOLO ROSSELLI / CONVERSTATION ABOUT "ARCHITECTURE AND FICTION IN PHOTOGRAPHY".
Pedro Leão Neto and Camilo Rebelo (organizers of DUEL/DUET (AAI) SERIES) will open the session and give the word to Fátima Vieira (U. Porto Vice-Rector for Culture) who will present the International Photography and Drawing Contest (DPIc): Space and Identity of the 14 Faculties of U. Porto. The next speaker will be José Miguel Rodrigues (Director of CEAU-FAUP) who will present the book of Pedro Gadanho and Paolo Rosselli A Talk on Architecture in Photography: Photographs by Paolo Rosselli and then give the word to the authors in order that a conversation around the theme of Architecture and Fiction in Photography may take place with the participation of all in the table.
(DPIc) - Space and Identity of the 14 Faculties of U. Porto
The International Drawing and Photography Competition (DPIc) - Space and Identity of the 14 Faculties of U. Porto: Visual Spaces of Change (VSC) is addressed to all U. Porto students and researchers. The core theme of the contest is the idea of Utopia and Visual Spaces of Change (VSC), focusing on the spaces and identity of the 14 Faculties of U. Porto. The competition is organized by the research group CCRE (FAUP) integrated in the R & D center of FAUP (CEAU) in partnership with the Student Associations of all Faculties of U. Porto, being promoters the consortium of the project, counting with the institutional support of the Rectory of U. Porto and FAUP.
A Talk on Architecture in Photography: Photographs by Paolo Rosselli
The book Pedro Gadanho - Paolo Rosselli - A Talk on Architecture in Photography: Photographs by Paolo Rosselli is the first of the four publications focused on each of the Dueto/Duelo sessions that fostered a critical debate related to Architecture, Art and Image between architects and photographers, which took place in 2016 in Casa das Artes of Porto, Portugal. The curators of this event - Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) Conference series - Duelo / Dueto - were Camilo Rebelo and Pedro Leão Neto. Having as base the talk between Pedro Gadanho and Paolo Rosselli and the rich exchange of ideas between these two authors, the book comprises a visual narrative where the sum is greater than the parts, allowing for an innovative reading and a more insightful understanding about the thoughts, work and artistic strategies of Rosselli photography.
Visual Spaces of Change (VSC)
Visual Spaces of Change is the first stage of an Architecture, Art, Image, and Innovation (AAI2) Project, which has a significant component of Contemporary Photography combined with complementary research in Space Syntax and Information Technology. Building on earlier research from the Center for Communication and Spatial Representation (CCRE), this project will investigate the conditions for the creation of a network of public and collective spaces capable of catalyzing emerging dynamics of urban change in Oporto Metropolitan Region (AMP). The territory of this study is simultaneously used as the laboratory for empirical experimentation and as the stage for visual representation of the agents and processes of urban change. This research project will produce visual synthesis of these dynamics in order to render visible aspects of its interconnected nature and historical singularity, which are difficult to perceive without the purposeful use of image and photography. This project breaks new ground in proposing an original combination of visual research methods and spatial analysis, departing from the identification of a set of strategic city spaces and pathways connected by network points (VSCNP) identified in the urban grid. These network points are calculated by using syntactic measurements, which allow for the identification of the location of optimal interaction between public and collective spaces. Contemporary Photography Projects (CPP) will be developed and implemented in the selected locations, conceived as visual narratives that intentionally interfere with the metropolitan territory in a self-reflective representation of its own process of change.
Biographies
Pedro Leão Neto
Pedro Leão Neto (Porto, Portugal, 1962) is an architect and senior lecturer of Communication, Photography and Multimedia (CFM), and Computer Architecture Added Design (CAAD) at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP). He is also the coordinator of the research group Centro de Comunicacao e Representacao Espacial (CCRE). He holds an MA (Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, 1997) and a PhD (University of Manchester, 2002). He has curated several architectural photography exhibitions and international seminars. He is the author of several books and Editorial Coordinator of scopio Editions, which is focused on the subject of Documentary and Artistic Photography related with Architecture and co-editor of On the Surface: Public Space and Architectural Images in Debate.
Camilo Rebelo
Camilo Rebelo was born in Porto in 1972; he graduated in Architecture at the "Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto" (FAUP) in 1996. From 1994 to 1999, he collaborated with Eduardo Souto Moura and Herzog & de Meuron. In 2000, he founded his own studio.
He won several awards: just think about the first prize at the international competition for the Museum of Art and Archeology of Vale do Côa (2004-2009), designed with Tiago Pimentel; later he received the 2013 Bauwelt Prize award. He received the Honorable mention in the international competition of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (2007) and he has been recently awarded with the Baku UIA International Award for his Ktima House in Greece (2017), both projects were realized in collaboration with Susana Martins.
Camilo Rebelo lectured at the Faculdade de Arquitectura in Porto and as invited professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne with Eduardo Souto de Moura, at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura Universidad de Navarra, at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio and, currently, at the Milan Polytechnic Institute.
Fátima Vieira
Fátima Vieira is Associate Professor (with “Agregação”) at the Univ. Porto, where she has been teaching since 1986. She has got her Doctoral degree in 1998, with a thesis on William Morris and the British Utopian Literary tradition. She was the Chair of the Utopian Studies Society / Europe from 2006 to 2016. She is the Coordinator of the University of Porto's branch of CETAPS - Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies, where she is Director of the Digital Lab and the leader of the research project Mapping Utopianisms. AT ILC – the Institute for Comparative Literature Margarida Losa, she has coordinated 3 research projects on Portuguese Utopianism. Currently, she coordinates the research project Alimentopia/Utopian Foodways and the ARUS/Lyman Tower Sargent Bibliography.
José Miguel Rodrigues
José Miguel Rodrigues was born in Oporto in 1970. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) in 1994. He is a Master and Doctor in the same school (1998 and 2000). He is co-author of the Nova Aldeia da Luz project (1995-2002) and, since 1998, a professor at FAUP. In 2013 he published his doctoral thesis "The Ordered and Affordable World of Forms of Architecture" and, since 2011, he has developed a postdoctoral project entitled "The relation between theory and practice in Giorgio Grassi: affinities and oppositions", a Portuguese translation project of the author's written work. Translated, as part of the Giorgio Grassi editorial project, opera omnia, sic: "Leon Batista Alberti and the Roman Architecture" and "Written Writings 1965-2015". He was a member of the FIMS Board of Directors and Director of the Integrated Master's Degree in Architecture at FAUP (2009-2018). He is currently Director of the FAUP research center (CEAU-FAUP) and Associate Professor at the same school, lecturing: History of Modern Architecture (in Master's Degree) and Methods of Research in Architecture and Urbanism (PDA).
Pedro Gadanho
Pedro Gadanho is an architect and writer, and is curator in the Department of Architecture and Design for The Museum of Modern Art. He was the editor-in-chief of Beyond, Short Stories on the Post-Contemporary, a magazine started in 2009 through Sun Architecture, and he is the author of Arquitectura em Público, published through Dafne and recipient of the FAD Prize for Thinking and Criticism in 2012. He taught at the Oporto Faculty of Architecture (2000–2003), and was a co-director of ExperimentaDesign. He has been the curator of international exhibitions such as Space Invaders (2002), for the British Council, London; and Pancho Guedes, An Alternative Modernist, for The Swiss Architecture Museum, Basel. He joined the advisory panel for the British Pavilion at The Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010, and was the co-organizer of the 1st International Conference on Architecture and Fiction: Once Upon a Place-Haunted Houses and Imaginary Cities (2010).
Paolo Rosselli
Paolo Rosselli was introduced to photography by Ugo Mulas at the age of 20. After the degree in Architecture he begins a series of long journeys in India with Arturo Schwarz. During these long stays dedicated to the architecture of the Hindu temple, he begins assembling photographic profiles of Indian cities. Since then, his approach to architecture through photography evolves in other directions to contemporary architecture in Europe; towards masters of modern architecture as Giuseppe Terragni, and in the direction of the past, the Renaissance architecture in Italy.
Besides this activity he has pursued specific researches on contemporary urban landscape and on the interiors of the home, seen as a place where people leave traces of their living. He was invited to the Venice Biennial in three editions: in 1993 he exhibited groups of works on signs and messages found in the cities; in 2004 he shows an exploration on the interior of the home; lastly, in 2006, he showed a group of images of contemporary cities as Mexico, Shanghai, L.A., Istanbul, London.
Recently, with the book Sandwich digitale and Scena Mobile published in 2009 and 2012 by Quodlibet, he has started to write on photography and about the changes in the perception of the real world in the digital age. In all, he is author of around twenty books. Paolo Rosselli was teacher of photography at the Milan Polytechnic for a brief period. He lives and works in Milano.
