CANAL TELEVISIVO METRO TV DIVULGA PROJETO CONTRAST: FOTOGRAFIA NO ENSINO SUPERIOR EM DIVERSAS ESTAÇÕES DO METRO DO PORTO


O canal televisivo Metro TV está presentemente a transmitir um conjunto de vídeo-clips sobre o projeto CONTRAST em diversas estações da Metro do Porto

O projeto Contrast corresponde à criação de uma rede de iniciativas artísticas multidisciplinares na Arte, Arquitectura, Design e Fotografia que conta com o envolvimento direto de onze escolas de ensino superior a lecionar fotografia em diversas áreas disciplinares e artísticas: ARCO, DARQ, DCAM, EA.UCP, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP, FEUP e IPT. O projeto foi seleccionado para financiamento no concurso de apoio a projectos criação e edição da DGARTES, através da Associação Cultural Cityscopio e conta com o apoio da Metro do Porto que desta forma contribui para a divulgação e suporte  do ensino e investigação da fotografia em Portugal.

O projeto CONTRAST pretende contribuir para a divulgação, criação e ensino da fotografia na sua interação com a Arte, Arquitectura e Design. Esta contribuição está a ser desenvolvida no âmbito nacional e internacional através da partilha de experiências e conhecimentos entre escolas, grupos e associações não académicas, aproximando o interesse de diversos públicos por estes temas numa perspetiva transversal e holística.

Interessa à Metro do Porto apoiar o ensino, a investigação e a arte contemporânea e por isso disponibiliza os seus espaços para a divulgação, apresentação e debate sobre ARTE, ARQUITECTURA, DESIGN E FOTOGRAFIA em volta do projeto CONTRAST. Estão previstas para o ano letivo de 2022 / 2023 outras iniciativas de exibição de projetos de fotografia contemporânea com origem no projeto CONTRAST comunicados por intermédio de projecção de vídeo e fotografia em diversas estações da Metro do Porto.

A coleção CONTRAST: A FOTOGRAFIA NO ENSINO SUPERIOR é constituída por publicações em livro com uma periodicidade bienal e editadas pela scopio Editions, existindo já dois números publicados.

A plataforma online CONTRAST constitui um suporte significativo de interação entre as diversas instituições envolvidas, bem como de divulgação do programa e seus conteúdos, potenciando a dinâmica relacional entre os vários produtos que se propõem desenvolver explorando as potencialidades de vídeo/áudio e formatos de livro online.

A Exposição multimédia CONTRAST: Ensino da Fotografia na sua interação com a Arte, Arquitetura e Design integra o programa de disseminação da rede de iniciativas artísticas multidisciplinares na Arte, Arquitectura, Design e Fotografia que conta com o envolvimento direto de onze escolas de ensino superior a lecionar fotografia em diversas áreas disciplinares e artísticas: ARCO, DARQ, DCAM, EA.UCP, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP, FEUP e IPT.

A exposição multimédia tem vindo a comunicar os trabalhos fotográficos de estudantes e de autores emergentes realizados no contexto de ensino das diversas instituições envolvidas neste projeto, permitindo simultaneamente ouvir os estudantes explicar os seus projetos, bem como observar os seus trabalhos fotográficos quer em formato de livro quer na plataforma online.

A exposição também tem acompanhado as mesas redondas, apresentações e conferências que têm vindo a ter lugar envolvendo as diversas instituições do projeto, reforçando desta forma a disseminação do seu programa e conteúdos, tirando proveito do potencial dos meios digitais como vídeo e áudio, assim como da sua plataforma online.

Ensaio Landscapes of Care: Between spaces of protection and political rights é seleccionado pelo Prémio Concurso Universidades Trienal de Lisboa Millennium bcp

Para disseminar a cultura arquitectónica em âmbito académico, este livro digital reúne uma selecção de trabalhos apresentados por instituições universitárias de todo o planeta. 

Nas palavras da dupla que assume a curadoria deste concurso, Cristina Veríssimo e Diogo Burnay, «As universidades são essenciais para a experimentação, inovação e produção de conhecimento, e as questões avançadas por Terra apelam a uma oportunidade para profissionais, estudantes e docentes poderem dialogar. Estas investigações exploram diferentes abordagens de escolas em todo o mundo que aspiram a mudar os paradigmas disciplinares da arquitectura, urbanismo e paisagismo.» 

Uma antologia open source tem grande potencial de aplicabilidade ao levar conhecimento a mais pessoas, inspirando a sua concretização na prática e fomentando o intercâmbio e novas aprendizagens entre instituições. Esperamos que este legado seja catalisador de uma mudança em prol do futuro da ecologia em arquitectura.

Gratuita e integralmente em inglês, pode ser descarregada online a partir do final de Setembro nos sites da Trienal e das editoras parceiras Circo de Ideias e Monade. Esta antologia reúne contributos de 12 países, do Canadá ao Egipto, com destaque para as cinco investigações oriundas de Portugal.

PRÉMIO ARCHIPRIX PORTUGAL: FOI ATIBUÍDA A ALUNA DA FAUP Menção Especial Pensamento e Crítica COM O TRABALHO 'Fragmentos de cidade. Imagens de arquitetura, do espaço e da memória'

Na edição 2022 do Prémio Archiprix Portugal, galardão que distingue anualmente os melhores projetos de mestrado em arquitectura, arquitectura paisagista e urbanismo apresentados nas instituições de ensino superior nacionais, foi atribuída à FAUP a Menção Especial Pensamento e Crítica ao trabalho de dissertação 'Fragmentos de cidade. Imagens de arquitetura, do espaço e da memória' da aluna Raquel Pelicano Teixeira Lagoa, orientada pelo Professor Pedro Leão Neto.

O trabalho de dissertação da aluna também serviu como base para outros estudos e projetos, nomeadamente a sua publicação na coleção Arquitectura, Arte e Utopia - U. PORTO Alumni Little Books: uma nova colecção de pequenos livros com base nas dissertações dos estudantes finalistas, que tem o apoio da U.Porto Press associada à Scopio Editions, bem como a participação no painel Visual Spaces of Change: Utopia na “21st Conference of the Utopian Studies Society Europe: Utopian Possibilities: Knowledge, Happiness and Wellbeing” com o artigo “The Sky Reflects the City So the Utopia is Born”.

Sophia Journal is currently accepting submissions for its third thematic cycle “Landscapes of Care”, addressing contemporary photographic and visual practices that focus on how architecture understood in a wide sense can help to heal a broken planet. The concept of “Landscapes of Care” has increasingly been adopted by diverse areas of study, from health geography to the arts, architecture and heritage preservation. It is used here in order to understand and document modern architecture, building, city and territory as living and inclusive organisms, as well as heritage resources for global sustainability. Modern architecture is a ‘heritage at risk’ as it belongs to a recent past that has not yet been sufficiently recognised by the authorities, scholars and general public. Our aim is to explore the ways in which photography and film can be used as meaningful instruments of research into the socioeconomic, political, historical, technical and ecological dimensions of modern architecture, city and territory.

In this call for papers and visual essays for this 8th issue of Sophia Journal- Landscapes of care: photography, film, modern architecture and landscape heritage– we invite theoretical and field work where architectural photography and filmmaking are descriptive, analytical and interpretive, communicating original perceptions and new understandings of modern architecture and landscapes. Photography and film projects that will allow us to show how modern buildings and landscapes have responded to and reflect the local conditions of their production and importance.  Projects which critique and expand our understanding of what constitutes modern architecture and landscape, in terms of its language, locations, functions, creators, patrons and publics.

Photography and film work that can allow us to see the social dimension of architecture and landscape, to understand architecture as Alvar Aalto did, “as a great synthetic process of combining thousands of definite human functions” together with Donna Haraway’s focus on human and non-human interplay —  new “naturecultures” to contribute to a greater understanding of modern architecture’s and landscape’s potential for a more ecological and sustainable balance and interplay between architecture and nature. 

Some issues of interest that can be taken on board when answering this call are the following:

  • How photography and film can be used for communicating the way modern architecture, landscape and city forms relate or confront present architectural programs and public spaces and their contemporary public appropriation

  • What photography and film tell us about the world we inhabit and can be used as a creative process that brings to light new ways of understanding modern architecture and landscape in contemporary urban space, as well as document their cultural significance and heritage values

  • How photography and film can be used for communicating the way past modern architecture, landscape and city forms relate to or confront present architectural programs, planning and public spaces and their contemporary public appropriation

  • How photography and film may set forward the idea of an architecture, changing our on-site perception and even turning it into a projected vision in space

  • The uses of photography and film in identifying, recording and 'unlocking' sites of transformation – i.e. buildings, landscapes, and places, which are undergoing, or will undergo, a process of renewal

  • Diachronic studies of modern architecture, landscape and planning programs and environments focused on patterns of activities and phenomena aiming at sequentially researching social change, and physical and cultural expressions that may occur during different time lapses

  • Photographic and filmic series that focus on the perceptive, sensorial and affective experience of modern architecture and landscape in the urban and rural context. 

Accepted submissions engage with the issues above in the form of theoretical papers, visual essays, interviews, and critical reviews of publications, exhibitions, and conferences.

The Editorial Team will have the responsibility of doing the first selection of entries (deadline 1st November 2022) and inform the authors (1st December) that to proceed with the call they are expected to deliver the first draft / presentation of their paper (between 3000 to 6000 words) or visual essay (length between 6 to 8 pages, plus text between 500 to 1000 words), by the 1st February 2023. 

The entries are then to be sent for review, being theoretical entries peer reviewed and visual essays reviewed by the Editorial Team. Authors are informed of the result of reviews by 1st April. Theoretical papers and visual essays have to be edited in accordance to the reviewers’ comments until the 1st June in order to be presented at the International Conference to be held on that month in connection with the 8th issue of Sophia Journal. 

In this way, Sophia Journal brings together each year a diverse group of researchers, architects, visual artists, and curators of international relevance, gathered on its International Conference, in an exercise of joint reflexivity about the intersection between photography and architecture from different perspectives and visual constructs. These international conferences embody an important stage during the process of the annual call and publication of each number of Sophia Journal. This means they enable an active dialogue between researchers, authors and the public, contributing to the identification of new avenues of research and artistic expression related to how photography can be explored as a meaningful instrument of communication, design and inquiry in the world of architecture and today ́s processes of urban change.

The conference will encompass a live and videoconference programme being organised in partnership with the institutions involved.

After the conference authors will be asked to edit their papers or visual essays based simultaneously on the issues raised with the debates that have taken place and the reviewers comments. A new final version for publication will have to be sent for reviewers until the 1st September, 2023 and they can approve the version with no more modification needed or still suggests further small modifications. Final deadline for publication is 1st November and if the paper or visual essay is not uploaded by that deadline, it is not included in Sophia Journal.

Sophia Journal está actualmente a aceitar submissões para o seu terceiro ciclo temático Landscapes of Care, abordando práticas fotográficas e visuais contemporâneas que se preocupam sobre o modo como a arquitectura, entendida num sentido amplo, pode ajudar a curar as relações entre o homem e a natureza, bem como a crise sócio-ambiental em que o planeta vive. 

O conceito de Landscapes of Care tem sido cada vez mais adoptado em diversas áreas do conhecimento, desde a geografia da saúde até às artes e arquitectura, assim como na preservação do património. Neste call interessam-nos práticas visuais que nos ajudem a compreender e documentar a arquitectura moderna e a sua construção e reabilitação, como também a percecionar a cidade e o território como organismos vivos e inclusivos e a reconhecer a importância dos recursos patrimoniais para a sustentabilidade global. 

A arquitectura moderna é um "património em risco", pois pertence a um passado recente que ainda não foi suficientemente reconhecido quer pelas autoridades quer por parte de muitos investigadores e do público em geral. O nosso objectivo é explorar de que modo a fotografia e o filme podem ser utilizados como instrumentos significativos de investigação nas dimensões socioeconómica, política, histórica, técnica e ecológica da arquitectura moderna, da cidade e do território.

Nesta convocatória de artigos e ensaios visuais para este  número da revista Sophia Journal Vol. 8 | Landscapes of care: photography, film, modern architecture and landscape heritage - convidamos os autores a submeterem trabalhos teóricos e ensaios visuais sobre arquitetura moderna onde a fotografia e o filme estão presentes de forma significativa.  Projetos descritivos, analíticos e interpretativos, capazes de oferecer uma percepção única e um novo entendimento sobre a arquitectura do moderno, bem como esta foi muitas vezes capaz de responder e reflectir as condições locais da sua produção.  Projectos que são territórios críticos capazes de expandir a nossa compreensão sobre a arquitectura e paisagem do moderno, em termos da sua linguagem, localizações, funções, criadores, patronos e públicos.

Interessam-nos trabalhos fotográficos e cinematográficos que nos permitam reconhecer a dimensão social da arquitectura e da paisagem e compreender a arquitectura como fez Alvar Aalto, “as a great synthetic process of combining thousands of definite human functions” juntamente com o enfoque de Donna Haraway na interacção humana e não humana - novas "naturecultures" capazes de contribuir para uma maior compreensão do potencial da arquitectura e da paisagem do moderno para um equilíbrio e uma interacção mais ecológica e sustentável entre a arquitectura e a natureza. 

Algumas questões de interesse que podem ser tidas em conta ao responder a esta chamada:

  • De que modo a fotografia e o cinema podem ser utilizados para comunicar o tipo de relacionamento existente entre as formas da paisagem e arquitetura moderna e os programas de arquitetura contemporânea e sua apropriação pública

  • De que modo a fotografia e o cinema conseguem oferecer uma perspetiva crítica e poética sobre o mundo atual que habitamos e trazer uma nova compreensão acerca da da paisagem e arquitetura moderna no espaço urbano contemporâneo, bem como documentar o seu significado cultural e os seus valores patrimoniais

  • De que modo a fotografia e o cinema podem ser utilizados para comunicar a forma como a paisagem e arquitetura moderna se relacionam ou confrontam com os programas de projeto urbano, arquitetura e os espaços públicos e a sua apropriação na contemporaneidade

  • De que modo a fotografia e o filme podem comunicar ideias nucleares sobre uma determinada arquitectura, alterando dessa forma a nossa percepção sobre esses espaços arquitetónicos

  • De que modo a fotografia e o filme podem ser utilizados para a identificação e o registo da transformação de um local, ou mesmo 'desbloquear' essa possibilidade - ou seja, de edifícios, paisagens e lugares poderem ser objetos de um processo de reabilitação

  • De que modo a fotografia e o filme podem ser utilizados em estudos diacrónicos sobre a paisagem e arquitectura moderna, ou seja, estudos sequenciais centrados nos padrões de actividades e dos fenómenos que caracterizam esses espaços, bem como nas alterações sociais, culturais e formais que aí ocorrem ao longo de diferentes lapsos de tempo

  • Séries fotográficas e fílmicas que se centram na experiência perceptiva, sensorial e afectiva da paisagem e arquitectura moderna na contemporaneidade.
     

Sobre a Sophia Journal

A Sophia Journal é uma revista académica de acesso aberto com arbitragem científica, publicada pelo Centro de Estudos em Arquitectura e Urbanismo (CEAU) - Grupo de investigação Arquitectura, Arte e Imagem (AAI) da Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (FAUP), em colaboração com a associação Cityscopio e a sua chancela  editorial scopio Editions.
Criada em 2016, a Sophia Journal publica artigos teóricos e ensaios visuais que investigam e pensam criticamente as intersecções entre a imagem e a arquitectura. Entendemos ambos os termos em sentido lato: a imagem da fotografia, pintura, desenho, cinema, video, televisão, novos media; a arquitectura enquanto paisagem, território, cidade, espacialidade e ambiente construído.

A FAUP apresentou a mesa redonda 'Relações e Cumplicidades entre Fotógrafo e Arquitecto: Fotografias em obras de Eduardo Souto de Moura de Luis Ferreira Alves', no dia 7 de novembro de 2017, com apresentação a cargo do Vice-director da FAUP, João Pedro Xavier e a moderação assegurada por Nuno Grande (DARQ/FCTUC - FAUP) que mediou uma conversa em torno do tema Fotografia e Arquitectura com a presença do fotógrafo Luis Ferreira Alves, do arquitecto Eduardo Souto de Moura, do arquitecto Nuno Brandão Costa (FAUP), e de Pedro Leão Neto (FAUP), editor do livro ‘Fotografias em obras de Eduardo Souto de Moura de Luis Ferreira Alves’.

escola superior de media artes e design

Ao longo de dois semestres os estudantes irão adquirir competências que lhes permitem uma reflexão, contextualização e abordagem aos processos criativos envolvidos na construção de narrativas através da realização de um projeto editorial vertido em livro. A formação parte de uma abordagem prática, experimental e interdisciplinar e fomentará o contacto com o mercado editorial, tendo em vista a expansão do panorama e oferta cultural ligada à pós-graduação postgraduate degree produção dos fotolivros. A pós-graduação em Fotolivro pretende que os estudantes adquiram ferramentas de edição fotográfica e editorial para a construção de um fotolivro, aprendam a sua gramática visual e especificidades e reconheçam as suas potencialidades no mercado editorial, académico e artístico. Este percurso seguirá uma metodologia essencialmente prática, destinada a ampliar a discussão da linguagem fotográfica e a sua transversalidade associada à construção de fotolivros, quer no âmbito da investigação, quer no plano artístico e editorial e sessões de pitching.

Over two semesters, students will acquire skills that allow them to reflect, contextualize and approach the creative processes involved in the construction of narratives through the realization of an editorial project translated into a book. The training is based on a practical, experimental and interdisciplinary approach and will foster contact with the publishing market, with a view to expanding the cultural panorama and offer linked to the production of photobooks. The postgraduate course in Photobook intends that students acquire photographic and editorial tools to build a photobook, learn its visual grammar and specificities and recognize its potential in the publishing, academic and artistic market. This path will follow an essentially practical methodology, aimed at broadening the discussion of photographic language and its transversality associated with the construction of photobooks, either in the scope of research, or in the artistic and editorial plan and pitching sessions.

Angelo Bonetti (1976, Turin, Italy) is a visual artist who works with photography, mainly a self-taught photographer who over the years has pursued and developed his own language. Bonetti creates works that generate different contents, associations and meanings that come into conflict. Space becomes time and language becomes image. His works have a strong vision in the approach to life and its everyday life, a continuous interest in what surrounds him, deepening themes such as memory, time and the connections of his personal stories, questioning the conditions of appearance of images, representations and ideas in the context of the contemporary visual culture in which they normally work.

Sessão de lançamento do livro “O Mundo às Costas”, de Pedro Bandeira

No último sábado (30), ocorreu a sessão de lançamento do livro “O Mundo às Costas” (2022), do arquitecto, professor e fotógrafo Pedro Bandeira, na livraria Circo de Ideias, no Porto. A sessão abriu espaço para uma conversa entre o autor, Magda Seifert, Pedro Baía e Pedro Leão Neto.

O Mundo às Costas apresenta-se como o primeiro volume (2001-2021) de uma "história universal" do século XXI - obviamente um delírio apesar de factual. Esta história (construída a partir de recortes de jornal), é acompanhada de um breve ensaio e de uma narrativa fotográfica dos lugares que estruturam o quotidiano do autor. Não sendo um livro de caracter disciplinar, a arquitetura (e a arquitetura sem arquitetos) acaba por ser o tema transversal que expressa toda a complexidade que caracteriza a nossa sociedade. Last 21st of April, by 18h30, took place at the headquarters of Ordem dos Arquitetos Secção Regional Norte (OA SRN) the launch and presentation of the 6th edition of Sophia Journal - ‘Visual Spaces of Change: photographic documentation of environmental transformations’.

 

The event was attended by Conceição Melo, president of OASRN, who was responsible for the opening presentation and by Bruno Baldaia, vice-president of OASRN, who Introduced the publication. After the intervention of Wilfried Wang titled Image and Conscience, the debate began with the moderation of Pedro Leão Neto, having the participation of Wilfred Wang (invited editor), Carolina Leite (CEAU / FAUP) and Bruno Baldaia (OASRN). 

 

The debate proceeded informally and allowed a broad reflection about diverse issues brought by the intervention Image and Conscience, enabling the table to address and discuss several of the photography projects and articles published in this 6th edition of Sophia Journal. The published work shows howphotography is explored as a significant research tool for critical and innovative views on architecture and urban transformation in their expanded fields and contextualized by larger systems: cultural, political, artistic, technical, and historical dimensions.

A Ordem dos Arquitetos Secção Regional Norte (OA SRN) recebeu na sua sede no passado dia 21 de Abril, pelas 18h30, a sessão de lançamento e apresentação da 6ª edição da publicação Sophia Journal - ‘Visual Spaces of Change: photographic documentation of environmental transformations’.

 

O evento contou com a presença de Conceição Melo, Presidente da OASRN que foi responsável pela abertura da sessão e de Bruno Baldaia, Vice-presidente da OASRN, que teve a seu cargo a apresentação da publicação Sophia. Após a intervenção de Wilfried Wang intitulada Image and Conscience, teve início o debatemoderado por Pedro Leão Neto, com a participação de Wilfred Wang (editor convidado), Carolina Leite (CEAU / FAUP) e Bruno Baldaia (OASRN).

 

O debate decorreu de forma informal e permitiu uma reflexão alargada sobre diversas problemáticas trazidas pela intervenção Image and Conscience, tendo a conversa possibilitado abordar e debater diversos dos trabalhos / artigos publicados nesta da 6ª edição da publicação Sophia Journal. Trabalhos estes onde a fotografia é explorada como um instrumento de investigação significativo na criação de perspetivas críticas e inovadoras sobre a arquitetura e a transformação do espaço urbano nos seus campos expandidos e contextualizados por sistemas maiores: dimensões culturais, políticas, artísticas, técnicas e históricas.

The first Architectural Studies Conference takes encounters with the recent past of architecture focusing mainly on the first two decades of the 21st Century. While this time period witnessed a vast increase in the number of architectural research with a rich variety of approaches, such an increase concurrently rendered evaluating possible implications more difficult. The incentive to bring together and designate an agenda of architectural theories, arguably, has left its place to responding to urgent crises regarding ecology, violent conflicts, economic ambiguity, digital dependence, social injustice and discrimination through gender and postcolonial theories as well as many others, thereby making the task of a possible articulation of architectural research methods a rather delicate one.

ABOUT:

Architectural Studies is a biannual conference series held by the Department of Architecture at Yeditepe University. The conference intends to facilitate intellectual exchange on disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship and practices of architecture through the subcategories foundations, positions, and words. (1) Foundations denote dispositions that act as the limits and potentials of architectural knowledge; (2) Positions entail setting a critical perspective within architectural scholarship and practices; (3) Wordshighlight the practice of writing (on/in) architecture in manifolds forms including criticism, narration, and documentation. Through its framework and biannually varying thematic foci, the conference encourages contributions that critically engage with the existing frameworks and convictions that shape architectural discourse, practices, and constructs.

The launching and presentation of the 6th edition of the Sophia Journal - 'Visual Spaces of Change: photographic documentation of environmental transformations' will take place on April 21, 2022, 6:30pm, at the OASRN's headquarters. The event is part of the research project funded by the FCT - Visual Spaces of Change (VSC) - under the responsibility of the Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) group, integrated in the R&D Centre for the Study of Architecture and Urbanism (CEAU) at FAUP.

The event will be attended by Maria Conceição Figueiredo Melo (President of OASRN) who will open the table. The presentation of the publication will be the responsibility of Bruno de Campos Baldaia (Vice-President of OASRN), who will then give the floor to Pedro Leão Neto (Director of the publication) who will be moderating the following debate. Wilfred Wang (Guest Editor of the 6th edition of Sophia Journal) will be the first to intervene with the keynote address Image and Conscience after which all who have integrated the Editorial team of this 6th edition will take part.

The architect Wilfried Wang is a member of CICA and the author of diverse essays, monographs and topographs on the architecture of the twentieth century, being the Guest Editor of the 6th issue of Sophia Journal. The other members of the Editorial Team were Jorge Marum (CIAUD-UBI), Leonor Matos Silva (Dinâmia'CET, ISCTE-IUL), Carolina Leite (CEAU / FAUP), Carlos Machado e Moura (CEAU / FAUP) and Maria Neto (CEAU / FAUP - UBI), being Pedro Leão Neto the Editor-in-chief of the publication.

Vol. 6 of Sophia Journal Visual Spaces of Change: photographic documentation of environmental transformations published articles addressing the following global issues: How do we all become aware of the gradual, but inescapable changes in the environment? How does photography raise public awareness of the pressing environmental changes implicit in our anthropocentric epoch? How can photography contribute to these complex debates? These issues were addressed from several perspectives: from confronting our memories and understandings of a place to reactivating ‘what is no longer there’ or proposing ‘what could be there’.

This volume brings together photographers and researchers who make significant contributions to these discussions, including the material processes of creating, managing and interpreting sets of documents. We are publishing work where photography is explored as a significant research tool for critical and innovative views on architecture and urban transformation in their expanded fields and contextualized by larger systems: cultural, political, artistic, technical, and historical dimensions. In this context, the works which are presented in Sophia question how the different dimensions of architecture and urban transformation may be meaningfully understood or reframed through the different lenses and perspectives of visual processes.

Abstract

The International Conference for SOPHIA #6 took place at the Faculty of Architecture of University of Porto (FAUP), continuing the annual cycle of international forums on a specific theme.
Sophia Journal ́s International Conference consisted of a live and video conference programme organized by CEAU / FAUP in partnership with other institutions and the event will be held online and access to the Conference Room will only be possible to the organising team.

Encompassing a rich and diverse programme around: (i) roundtables for each panel concerning a focused topic coming from Sophia ́s comprehensive call; (ii) presentation of articles submitted; (iii) the opening of Visual Spaces of Change: photographic documentation of environmental transformations exhibition using the VSC Mobile Projector.
The contents of the exhibition will also be online soon and the exhibition experience is registered purely for research purposes, being analysed in the context of the ongoing Visual Spaces of Change: photographic documentation of environmental transformations articles and research.
The global objective of these international forums is to promote the reflection and debate on the universes of architecture, art and image, addressing various issues transversal to the worlds of photography and architecture, exploring how the image can be a means to cross borders and shift boundaries between different disciplinary areas.

Enquadrado na programação do projeto de investigação financiado pela FCT - Visual Spaces of Change (VSC) - , da responsabilidade do grupo de Arquitetura, Arte e Imagem (AAI) integrado no Centro de Estudos de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (CEAU) na FAUP, terá lugar no dia 21 de Abril de 2022, às 18h30, o lançamento e apresentação na sede da OASRN da 6a edição da publicação científica Sophia Journal - ‘Visual Spaces of Change: photographic documentation of environmental transformations’.

O evento contará com a presença de Maria Conceição Figueiredo Melo (Presidente da OASRN) que irá abrir a mesa. Criada em 2016 e editada pelo grupo de investigação Arquitectura, Arte e Imagem (AAI) do Centro de Estudos em Arquitectura e Urbanismo (CEAU) da FAUP, a Sophia Journal é uma publicação académica anual com revisão por pares dedicada à divulgação de artigos críticos e exploratórios sobre o universo da imagem e arquitectura. Todas as edições da Sophia Journal, bem como os artigos publicados, são de acesso livre.

O 6.o número da publicação Sophia Journal reúne diversos fotógrafos e investigadores cujos projectos e estudos contribuem de forma significativa para o debate destas temáticas.

Destacam-se na presente edição os trabalhos a partir dos quais a "fotografia é explorada como um instrumento de investigação significativo na criação de perspetivas críticas e inovadoras sobre a arquitetura e a transformação do espaço urbano nos seus campos expandidos e contextualizados por sistemas maiores: dimensões culturais, políticas, artísticas, técnicas e históricas".

Neste contexto, os trabalhos "questionam estas diferentes dimensões da arquitectura e da transformação urbana e permitem compreender ou reenquadrar essas mesmas dimensões através de estratégias visuais diversas e diferentes lentes e perspetivas".

Os artigos publicados centram-se nas seguintes temáticas globais: De que forma podemos obter uma maior consciência sobre as mudanças graduais, mas inescapáveis, que se estão a operar no meio ambiente? De que forma pode a fotografia sensibilizar diversos públicos para as urgentes mudanças ambientais implícitas na nossa época antropocêntrica? De que forma a fotografia pode contribuir para o debate destas temáticas complexas? Estas questões e outras foram debatidas a partir de várias perspectivas: desde o confronto com as nossas memórias e compreensão de um lugar até ao reactivar "do que já não existe" ou a visão "do que poderia existir".
