CONTRAST: MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTISTIC NETWORK OF ART, ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND PHOTOGRAPH

The plan of activities being proposed – which aims to contribute to the dissemination, creation and teaching of photography in its interaction with Art, Architecture and Design – will be founded on the work and synergies already developed via the publication CONTRAST, which features the work of nine schools where photography is taught across various artistic areas and disciplines: ARCO, DARQ, DCAM, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP and the IPT. CONTRAST AADF will advance its earlier work bringing it up-to-date with the creation of a new publication – CONTRAST II – now in a bilingual version with a greater capacity for dissemination by incentivizing new synergies with an online platform, consolidating the potential of this collaborative network, and contributing to the development and dissemination of photography as an area of knowledge and form of artistic and documentary expression as well as a field of research and fundamental tool in the exploration and valorization of diverse territories. The proposal of CONTRAST AADF is to strengthen the artistic and editorial offerings and to stress access to and participation in the arts by way of a set of online artistic initiatives that bring together various institutions and groups from distinct communities.

The artistic initiatives proposed include the creation of artistic works and the programming of pre-existing works and specific actions to expand the target-public by involving partner institutions and local communities and enabling active participation in the conception and creation of the arts for diverse audiences, in which the proposed initiatives serve as documentary and artistic territories for a variety of projects.

CONTRAST PUBLICATION

One of the main objectives of CONTRAST publication is to allow for the collection of a diverse set of texts that offer critical analysis and that reflect upon the photographical projects created within the context of the learning and research environment representative of the principal Portuguese institutions of higher learning where photography is embraced within the scope of other disciplines, such as architecture, art, design and photography, among others. CONTRAST thus offers a wide range of texts written by professors and researchers on pedagogical strategies and includes the selection of photographic projects created by students, the scope and responsibility for which falls to each individual institution or course. So given the fact that there is no current publication with characteristics comparable to CONTRAST, we believe that this editorial project will respond to an important gap in terms of the field of teaching photography in Portugal. CONTRAST thus desires to contribute to the development and dissemination of photography as a field of knowledge. We believe that this publication will enable readers to have a better perception of the different educational systems and objectives relative to Photography in the context of higher education in Portugal as well as their results. For all these reasons, we believe that CONTRAST will help to create synergies amongst a wide range of photography schools and will bring greater visibility to both the institutions involved and the unique projects of the final-year students by giving them broader exposure on a national and international level.
